NOC and operations

# Understand the situation. _Decide what comes next._

From a monitoring signal to an operational decision: know which services work, what remains degraded and who leads the next action.

Illustrative monitoring views. Service commitments are defined in your contract.

Detect relevant signals

Connect events to the service and its dependencies.

Understand the context

Assess the affected scope before drawing conclusions about the cause.

Coordinate the response

Give the right responder useful context and track their action.

## From detection to closure.

1. 01

    ### Detect

    Open an event for investigation.

2. 02

    ### Assess

Connect the service, equipment and observed impact.

3. 03

    ### Respond

Prepare the action and coordinate responders.

4. 04

    ### Close

Verify recovery, then document the outcome.

## One incident, two levels of detail.

The dashboard shows the state of the network; the report organises the response. This case uses the urban aggregation network presented in the engineering dossier.

An educational scenario with no connection to a real network. Measurements, times and volumes only illustrate how to interpret an operational situation.

### Failure on the North aggregation link

The North → core A segment is unavailable. Traffic reaches core B through the remaining path.

Same synthetic example

#### Service restored. Redundancy degraded.

The incident remains open until repair is complete and the return to the normal architecture is validated.

**Observed impact**

The failure interrupted the direct path from the North PoP to core A. After rerouting, all six service probes respond; the North → East segment carries 68 Gbit/s out of 100 Gbit/s.

**Actions taken**

The NOC confirmed traffic rerouting, checked services and passed the information needed for repair to the transport maintenance provider.

**Validation obtained**

Service has been verified within the scope of the probes. The backup path is carrying traffic; this check closes neither the repair nor the capacity follow-up.

#### Who does what?

- **The NOC coordinates.**It tracks service, the load on the remaining path and progress on the intervention.
- **The transport maintenance provider repairs.**It locates the fault, carries out the repair and provides its test measurements.
- **The network operator validates the return to normal.**It authorises recommissioning and verifies resilience before closure.

Next decision

Arrange recommissioning of the repaired segment, then verify traffic and both paths before closing the incident.

In the meantime, maintain increased monitoring of the remaining path and keep escalation responsibilities in place.

**The three stages illustrated**

1. **09:41 · detect and assess.**Loss of the North → core A segment; correlate the alarm with the affected path.
2. **10:24 · verify service.**Traffic rerouted, service probes passing, capacity still monitored. Redundancy remains degraded.
3. **After repair · accept and close.**Segment checks, authorised return to normal and final report.

Useful monitoring connects measurements to services, responsibilities and operational decisions.
